In Islam, stealing public money is considered a serious sin.
The Qur’an clearly forbids taking wealth unjustly:
“Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly…” Qur’an (2:188)
1. It is theft (Haram)
Islam strictly prohibits stealing, whether from an individual or from the public. Public funds belong to the whole community, so stealing them harms many people.
2. It is betrayal (Amanah)
Public money is a trust (amanah). The Prophet ď·ş said:
“Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock.” Sahih al-Bukhari
Leaders and officials are responsible for protecting public resources, not misusing them.
3. It is corruption (Fasad)
Islam strongly condemns corruption:
“Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.” — Qur’an (5:64)
Stealing public funds leads to poverty, injustice, and suffering in society.
4. Severe consequences
In Islamic teaching:
It is a major sin (kabirah).
The person must repent sincerely.
They must return the stolen money.
